The EA-6B Prowler will be retired sometime around 2010.
One of the options for replacement under current consideration is the
Airborne Electronic Attack version of the new Super Hornet. This airframe
is known as the EF-18F or F/A-18G "Growler".
It is expected that the EF-18F will be 99% compatible with
the F/A-18F Hornet. The most obvious difference on evaluation airframes is
the addition of three external AN/ALQ-99 Jamming Pods. One of these pods
is fitted to the centreline of the fuselage, and one is fitted to each
wing on either the inside or middle pylon.
Cutting Edge's Growler conversion could not be much
simpler. Three pods are supplied in grey resin,. The main body of each pod
is a single part, while the cap and the small propeller for the Ram Air
Turbine is cast separately. The pods are cast onto a thin casting block
along the length of the bottom of the part. This will be quite simple to
remove.
The Growler evaluation airframe scheme is quite colourful,
and there is lots of potential for "what if" schemes using these pods too.
Recommended.
