These MK-83 1000 LB bombs are the first in a series
of 1/48 and 1/32 scale Modern Aviation Ordnance items Orion will be
releasing over the next few months.
The version of MK-83 depicted in this set is specific to the USN and USMC.
The bombs feature the rough ablative Thermal Protective coating applied to
USN/MC bombs for shipboard use.
Included are 4 MK-43 Target Detecting Devices to provide an airburst
capability (fitted in the photo above), and 4 M904 Nose fuzes (as seen in
the image below). The BSU-85 fin uses a parachute to retard the fall of
the weapon.
The MK-83 was the weapon of choice (as far as bombs are concerned) for the
US Marine Corps and US Navy during Operation Desert Storm. The Marine
Corps used the MK-83/BSU-85 configuration extensively on its F/A-18A/C
aircraft from Sheik Isa Air Base in Bahrain. The weapon was also used
during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
USN and USMC aircraft cleared to carry it include the F/A-18A/C/D/E/F,
F-14A/B/D, S-3B, and AV-8B just to name a few.
