There is a new resin “kid on the block”; LOON MODELS, the in-house resin
cottage industry of Roll Models. It appears that the first efforts are a
success. Especially, as these new resin pieces are specifically for the great
Tamiya P-47 D Thunderbolt.
The parts are designed to simply replace the kit parts. No cutting of the kit or
the resin is required. The best part is that there are no molding block! There
is nothing more than what would be a sprue attachment point on the bottom of the
cowl and on the opening at the bottom of the early P-47 D cowl flaps. The resin
is very thin and the delicate panel lines duplicated the panel lines of the kit;
no mismatch!
The P-47C cowl (LO 48206) comes with both open and closed cowl flaps. The
instruction discuss the issue of the C model, and note that the C-5 was the only
C model that may have had the conversion to the bulged keel done in the field.
They note you should check your references carefully depending on the aircraft
you model, so you can use the Tamiya kit unaltered.
The
cowl flaps for the early P-47D (LO 48207) have the squared bottom flap and are
molded open. The instructions also note that some early Ds had the straight
keel; so once again references should be checked.
I highly recommend these sets to anyone who want to get the most out of the
Tamiya P-47.
