FirstLook

Pavla's first foray into 1/32 scale is a full replacement cockpit and canopy sets for Trumpeter's MiG-19P and MiG-19PF kits.

These cockpits are offered as two separate sets. The differences are very subtle indeed, the most noticeable being the gunsights. Comments in this review therefore apply equally to both sets.

Each cockpit comprises only 12 resin parts. This small parts count does not imply any compromise in accuracy. Each part is beautifully detailed, with many features cast in place, including the seat harness.

Casting quality is excellent, with no pin holes or other imperfections apparent on either of my samples. There is some wafer-thin flash present, which can be tidied up with a swipe of a sharp hobby knife.

Resin parts are mainly cast to each block via fine strips, so removal will not be a great chore. The only exceptions are the main cockpit tub and the seat, which will require a few minutes each with a razor saw.

The vacform canopies are well formed and very clear. The shape is also an improvement on the Trumpeter kit parts.

The final element of these cockpit sets is the instruments. These are printed on clear acetate sheet, and are intended to be punched (or cut) out and glued on to the instrument panel. Although this will require a bit of time and effort, the effect should be quite authentic.

Trumpeter's big MiGs can be picked up very cheaply these days, and they are not bad kits. The addition of these cockpits to the kits will represent a major enhancement, especially under that shiny new canopy!

Highly Recommended
