Pete’s Hangar continues its quest to improve the old 1/72 scale Frog/Novo/Eastern Express/Revell Vultee Vengeance with a new engine, cowl and propeller set in resin and white metal. This set joins the excellent multimedia cockpit offered by the same company for the 1/72 scale Vengeance, reviewed earlier on HyperScale.

This simple set comprises just three parts – a cowl and engine in caramel coloured resin, and a white metal propeller assembly. All the parts are perfectly formed in my sample.

The engine is beautifully detailed. The sides have been slightly flattened to ensure that it fits in the cowl. This seems to be a good compromise – losing a little detail in areas that will never be seen in order to save the modeller trouble when actually fitting the engine.

The cowl is similarly simple. It is a one-piece assembly with a keyed groove to ensure correct alignment of the engine.

The 12’ prop is produced to the correct scale and the profile of the blades look good. The propeller assembly is also available separately for either the Vengeance or 1/72 scale DC-3 kits.

In fact, all three parts are ready to use with virtually no preparation. The engine part on my sample slotted accurately into the engine cowl, and there are no nasty casting blocks to remove from the resin or the white metal.

Please note that, even though the engine and the cowl intake areas are better detailed than the recent Special Hobby kit parts, the cross section of the rear of the resin cowl and the Special Hobby fuselage are wildly different. This accessory is only applicable to the Frog kit and its descendants.

Recommended for anyone building the Frog/Novo Vengeance.
