To avoid redundancy of the history aspect of this review please refer to
my 1/48 scale Do 217 N-2 resin conversion review of the Simple Models
kit.
An enterprising fellow named John McIllmurray has produced quite the
range of resin conversions under the AIMS label which is distributed
exclusively thru Czech Six Publications in England.
While most of Johns resin conversion to date have been of the workhorse
Ju 88 (and he has a ton of them folks) in 2003 he “strayed” away from
the Ju 88 series of kits briefly to manufacture a very nice Do 217 N-2
resin conversion set, which is meant to be used in conjunction with the
rather nice Italeri Do Do 217 N-1 kit.
The conversion consists of just 4 cream colored resin parts:
-
A one piece solid nose cone with
revised gun layout and detail.
-
Top dorsal fairing
-
Ventral 1 piece belly fairing.
-
Instrument panel with circuit box and
air canisters.
The conversion of the Italeri Do 217 N-1 kit is a fairly simple
ordeal with this kit. One needs to remove a small section of the lower
bomb bay for the installation of the ventral fairing.
The top dorsal fairing will require some surgery on the rear of the
Italeri clear canopy to install.
The nose is close to a direct replacement of the Italeri kit with
revised gun layout and better detail that the basic injected molded
part.
Also included is the very nice instrument panel with upper nose
decking which is to be used after the Italeri kits upper nose decking is
removed.
For those wishing a reference on how to accomplish the build of this
kit, I can point you to Scale Aviation Modeling (SAM) Volume 25 Number
3, in which John did a full build review of his conversion.
This is a very nice conversion for those of you who wish to have an
1/72 example of this, Dorniers premier night fighter.
